It's always been in a ponytail, there's just some hair out of it. It gets hidden behind his cloak/shoulder in panel 4, but you can see it again in panel 5.

It's the beach not the sun. if you look in panel 3 you can see the sun is behind them so if it wasn't the beach it could still be a reflection of the sun though the colors are off.
